Crime rises in Houston despite national decline

Reports of violent crime rose 6.6 percent last year in Houston, despite dropping nationally by 6.7 percent, according to an FBI study released Sunday.

City officials and victims' advocacy groups say part of the blame should go to the courts and to prison releases that burden the city with hardened criminals.

Fueling the rise in Houston were sharp increases in the numbers of rapes, robberies and aggravated assaults reported to police last year, compared with 1998. By contrast, the number of murders in Houston dropped 5.1 percent to 241 in 1999, the FBI reported.

"There are so many variables that come into play," said Andy Kahn of the Mayor's Crime Victims Program. "But I do think it's safe to say there's a direct correlation between crime and the increase in the release of violent offenders in Harris County."

GORE back to a tie today (1% behind) and look at all the undecideds. Attention to 51% of Nader voters likely to change their vote. That's 2% more for Gore probably.

Strangely enough, in several of the polls I have seen in the past month, where they do both 2 and 4 candidate questions, Bush does better when Nader is out of the picture. So don't assume that all Nader votes are taken from Gore.

GORE back to a tie today (1% behind)

Could we categorize your statement as a lie?

If one candidate has a higher point value than the other, how can it be "back to a tie"? (Of course, it has always been a "statistical tie" when including the margin of error.)
