Once again, your comments on Germany in the 1920's and 1930's is off the mark. That situation arose not because of nationalistic pride (although that was a part of the story), but more due to the harsh economic realities that occurred in the 1920's (which is a subject all unto itself). Before you condemn those common German citizens of the 1930's as barbarians (from the comfortable chairs of our current American situation), you should know of what you speak.

Actually, the Nazis got control because the only opponents who would really fight them were the Communists. The Socialists (SPD) were unwilling to take to the streets and slug it out. The Liberals were totally gutless. Hitler got conservative business interests to finance his struggle, and as soon as he took power (as a minority chancellor) crushed the Communists and everyone else opposed to him. Many otherwise reasonable people (including many English Conservatives) thought Hitler was the only choice.
