Mobile phones in Japan
grew at 20% in past year
TOKYO--Japan's mobile phone industry continues to grow at a healthy rate, with cellular subscriptions passing the 55 million mark in August.

This was an increase of 20.7% over the year-ago total and is up significantly from the 51.14 million subscribers at the end of March 2000, according to Japan's Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications. Adding in PHS (personal handyphone system) subscribers, Japan has more than 60.87 million subscribers.

PHS subscriptions are levelling off after they peaked in 1998, and pager subscriptions have dropped from over 10 million in 1996 to less than 1.6 million at the end of August.

One segment of the mobile phone industry that has seen rocketing growth is wireless Internet services. Leading the way is the i-mode service of NTT DoCoMo which need only a few years to sign up over 10 million customers.

Thanks for that article, Brian.

re: "We have a two-step situation, where we could decide whether to put [the process] on 8- or 12-inch."

My (non-expert) understanding was that 8 and 12 inch fabs had to be designed differently from the start, because the equipment (and the space it takes up, and the relationship of the various machines) was so different. LSI seems to be saying a semi company can keep their options open, and decide between 8 and 12 inch in mid-project. I thought that one of the reasons that the transition to 300mm was going to be so lucrative for semi-equips, was that every piece of equipment had to be replaced.
