Yes, you are right, I quit corporate America 15 years ago, so I do not have any of the new variants of options. I use "founder" stock as my "tax evasion" instrument (g)(after five years holding, only 10% tax (VBG). But, when I was still a corporate executive, I use to exercise as many options as feasible upon vesting (I presume you know what that is), pay the tax on the differential between exercise price and market, sell a little of the stock to cover tax liabilities and ride the rest for a year. Since some more vested every year, I did not have to sell new stock and paid the tax liability from stock held for more than a year (post option exercise). That is how most smart optionees do it (hoping of course not to get caught in a maelstrom like the recent one, and in the last 15 years, they had very little worry such would happen).
