Erci,

Itanium is at 18 months and counting, while Willy seems to be headed for a launch 12 months after first silicon.

With Merced Itanium, I think the difference is that Intel doesn't want to launch it. There is no OS, the performance is mediocre at best, and as a result, there is no demand for it. McKinley should have some advantage compared to Merced.

Eric, <Assuming Mckinley first silicon arrives at the end of Q3 2001, what would be the minimum time to a launch?>

It is generally assumed that McKinley will launch 12 months after first silicon arrives. I don't forsee as many headaches involved with the McKinley launch as there were with the Itanium launch.

If you assume that, you will be making a VERY WRONG assumption.

McKinley is rumored to tape out in Nov. If true, they will have first silicon some time in Dec. It should take about a year for design and system verification and testing. That would indicate a launch late 2001 which is what Intel has been claiming all along. Sounds reasonable. From experience, I have quite a bit of faith in the H.P. design team.
