Novellus Systems' (NVLS: Nasdaq - news) shares were dropping after the company's Web site contained what appeared to be a press release with its third-quarter earnings.

A spokesperson for the company said the release was "false information." The company is scheduled to release its earnings after the close. The shares were recently off 14% to $34.75, after being higher most of the day.

The release said that the chipmaker reported earnings of 62 cents per share, matching the First Call/Thomson Financial estimate. Revenues came in at $359.1 million, up 10% from $326.0 million in the second quarter and 132% from the third quarter of 1999.
