WSJ Australian Stocks Media Shares Lead Gains

SYDNEY, Australia -- Shares ended sharply higher Monday, led by media and telecommunications concerns.

The All Ordinaries Index rose 61.8, or 1.96% to 3219.4. Advancers led decliners, 651 to 349. Volume was 557.4 million shares valued at 1.61 billion Australian dollars.

The Media Index rose 6.4%, the Telecommunications Index climbed 3.1% and the All Industrials Index added 2.3%. Analysts in Sydney said Australia's media stocks benefited from renewed confidence in the sector, as reflected in Friday's strong gains in their U.S. counterparts.

News Corp. jumped A$1.44, or 7.1%, to A$21.75 after the company named John Hartigan chief executive of its Australian division, News Ltd.

Publishing & Broadcasting gained 51 Australian cents to A$13.30 and Seven Network rose 27 cents to A$7.35.

Telstra shares rose 11 cents to A$6.06 on institutional buying following Friday's news that two weeks of talks with Hong Kong's Pacific Century CyberWorks ended in a new Asian asset partnership1 that each company said provided better financial terms.

Cable & Wireless Optus, Australia's second-largest telecom, rose 18 cents to A$3.90.
