Alcatel Signs Euro 43 Million Contract with Pro Futuro to
Provide Broadband Services in Poland

Contract Includes Core, Edge, Broadband Wireless Access, and Customer
Premises Equipment

PARIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 17, 2000--Alcatel (Paris:CGEP:PA)(NYSE:ALA - news) today announced that it has been selected
by Pro Futuro S.A. to supply and implement its broadband network in a deal worth Euro 43 million. Alcatel will supply a fully
managed end-to-end networking solution, including broadband wireless access, to build Pro Futuro's broadband infrastructure over
the next four years. This network enables the company to deliver broadband services -- including fast Internet access, data and video
transmission and IP telephony -- to customers throughout Poland.

The network will initially cover Lublin and its surrounding areas, but within four years the whole country -- including Warsaw,
Poznan and Katowice -- will be served.

``This agreement with Alcatel will provide Pro Futuro with the tools and support to become a leading communications service
provider in Poland,'' said Pro Futuro's Chairman, Jacek Zientkiewicz. ``We will deliver a full range of advanced telecommunications
services -- including broadband services and high-speed Internet -- to the whole country.''

Pearse Flynn, President of Alcatel's Carrier Networking Group said: ``Alcatel will enable Pro Futuro to achieve its ambitious plan to
roll out broadband wireless services nationwide within the next four years. We said we wanted to provide our customers with total
telecommunications solutions, and that's exactly what we're able to do for Pro Futuro.''

Alcatel LMDS (local multipoint distribution service), a broadband wireless access network operating in the 26 GHz band enabling Pro
Futuro to quickly and cost-effectively extend broadband services to their customers, powers the access portion of the network. This
win continues to affirm Alcatel's global leadership in the LMDS market and widens the company's fast-growing broadband wireless
footprint in Europe.

The Alcatel 7670 Routing Switch Platform (formerly the Alcatel 670 RSP), a next generation multi-protocol platform, will form the
core of Pro Futuro's network, providing high capacity, QoS-assured, carrier class switching and routing for IP/MPLS and ATM based
services. The throughput of the 7670 RSP scales from its initial 50 Gb/s to 450 Gb/s while in service, enabling Pro Futuro to keep
pace with market demand without service downtime.

The broadband network edge is based on the highly flexible Alcatel 7470 Multiservice Platform and Alcatel 7270 Multiservice
Concentrator (formerly the MainStreetXpress 36170 and 36177). The Alcatel 7410 broadband access server (BRAS) will be deployed
as a highly advanced service access layer and the Alcatel 5735 SMC will be used as a powerful service management solution.
Customer premises equipment will be based on the flexible Alcatel family of Omni products.
