What you say is partially true, however I believe that you overlook the impact of the Treaty of Versailles (sp?) on the country. The monarchy fled after the war, the Allies (and others) occupy large portions of the country, the economy is gutted and the common German (and soldier) believed that they really hadn't lost the war! Starvation, imposed by the Allies, takes hold, while many citizens are forbidden from working (and eating) as they had before the war. That doesn't quite sound as if it was totally self-imposed.
