One thing the Nazis convinced me of is that one must fight fire with fire. The refusal of moderates to force the government to end the street fighting led to open struggle between the Communists and Nazis. Given that choice, most moderates (SPD to conservatives) chose the Nazis. The knew pretty much what the Communists were up to from Soviet Russia's experience. They did not yet know what the Nazis had in store for them. They learned to their sorrow. In war and politics there is no substitute for determination. The Hawaiians lost their country because they refused to fight. If the Americans had knuckled under to the British Army in 1775 it would have been all up for us. The time comes when you have to fight or you will lose. Hitler understood that. His opponents (except the Communists) didn't.
