Eric: I think the violence is appalling -- to me it is a sign of weak leadership. Weak leaders allow or even encourage violence to shore up their political support. People band together when there is a "common enemy". It is an ugly facet of human nature, and one that has been exploited repeatedly over the centuries. Real leaders make peace. Real leaders step forward and say no to hatred and violence. Violence is for the weak and the weak minded IMO. The risk in having Clinton in Egypt is that if this move fails, the depth of the weakness in leadership will become even more apparent -- Arafat is probably the weakest to of the three, but Ariel Sharon is showing how fragmented Israel is now as well.
