OOsiks.. are the envy of any white man... they are are about 18 to 24 inches and harder than any rock on the planet. They are actually the penis bone of the Walrus. On a fishing trip in Bristol Bay our herring spotter pilot spotted a dead walrus off cape Newenham.. about an 8 hour run for us. We had nothing to do but wait for the herring to rippen so we ran out there.. turns out the natives had been on a shooting spree, and there were actually 7 dead walrus on the beach. They had done their shooting the fall before, so the walrus had an odor about them that was pretty impressive. But we wanted ivory, and we were not to be denied. For 12 hours we chopped and cut, some of the guys threw up, but we left with 7 head sets of warus tusks, and 6 oosiks. We weren't sure of the regs of owning such treasures so we buried them on this island, with a map and everything. (It turns out it was perfectly legal to harvest the ivory, as long as you registered it, but we are talking about a federal government who makes owning eagle feathers illegal.. so we thought twice. A friend of mine got warned at age 10 for picking up the feather of the great white headed seagull..lol) Not to get off topic, but what a great day for the bald eagle it was to get made the national bird!! Our government would spend billions to save this scavanger, and a man found killing one had better be starving.. but kill 8 pheasants in a weekend, and you are a hero.. the eagle elders are truly blessed..lol Anyway, I got(by drawing) the biggest set, which would be number 1 in the boone, and crocket..(big deal).. my oosik fell off the shed, and my dog chewed on it for two days.. poor bastard never put a dent in it.. seriously.. these things are hard!! At least that is the oosik I know about...lol To get hit in the head with an oosik could be the start of a truly bad day.. Ak
