We were discussing hate crimes- a hate crime is NOT just about murder, I wanted to make sure you knew hate crimes were much broader than that. I am NOT comparing anything- I am merely telling you that hate crimes cover many crimes. It's a fact, not a comparison. Society has a right to make judgments about crimes. We DO make distinctions in murder (for example)- we always have. You may not like the distinctions we make. I do not mind them.

If you are worried about desensitizing people to violence I think violence in the media (video games where you can kill people constantly, movies where death and dismemberment is good fun) is something you should focus on before you worry about making distinctions between types of murder. Intent is important legally. It was important before hate crimes.

It has been shown that watching violence desensitizes people quite effectively. There is no evidence that hate crime legislation does any such thing.
