Philips sees chip sales ahead of mkt avge of 25pct
AMSTERDAM, Oct 17 (Reuters) - Dutch Philips Electronics NV said on Tuesday it expected sales at its semiconductor division to grow in 2001 ``slightly ahead'' of an expected market average of 25 percent.

Chief Financial Officer Jan Hommen said the margin had widened to 20.5 percent in the third quarter of this year from 19.9 percent in the second. Excluding the purchase of MiCRUS wafer plant from IBM (NYSE:IBM - news) and certain provisions, the margin would have been 21.7 percent.

``We are very pleased with the margin. The order book remains strong,'' Hommen said, adding he expected further sales growth in the fourth quarter.

Earlier, Philips reported a rise in third quarter net income to 2.07 billion euros ($1.75 billion). In the semiconductor division, income from operations mushroomed to 373 million euros from 154 million a year earlier as sales to the telecommunications industry grew strongly and as the dollar appreciated against the euro.

Earnings at U.S.-based chipmaker VLSI, which Philips bought a year ago, also improved.
