Denni,

Wow – a 1.2GHz chip hot out of the oven, and with a winning price as well. AMD says that the Athlon 1.2GHz will cost $612 each in a 1000-unit quantity. That’s well below Intel’s 1.2… oh, wait a minute! Intel doesn’t have a 1.2GHz processor! Well, maybe they do on paper, because that’s the only way they release nowadays.

Yeah, yeah, Pentium4, whatever – I’ll believe it when I see it. Intel can’t ship their way out of a wet paper bag right now, and is blaming their current poor financials on “slumping PC sales in Europe”. On the other hand, AMD is making record financial numbers this quarter, and their European sales are just dandy, thank you. Intel better pull their head out, or they’re going to lose big-time.

The Athlon family has some great company now (minus Dell, of course) with Compaq also announcing today that they will be building higher-end Presario systems around the new 1.2GHz Athlon. Add this to Gateway, HP and others, and you will find that many PC builders are starting to back away slowly from the stench of Intel’s lack of shipping product.
