Chicagoland Presence to Ten; Two New
Locations to Celebrate Grand Openings on
October 19, 2000

ROCKY HILL, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 16, 2000--Ames
Department Stores, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMES) announced today it would
celebrate the opening of two new Chicago area stores on October 19, 2000. A
third grand opening celebration on the same day in Latham, New York, an
Albany suburb, will bring the chain-wide number of stores to 479.

One of the two new Chicago-area stores is one of the former Goldblatt's
locations purchased by Ames earlier this year. Four of the former Goldblatt's
stores opened earlier in September when the Company made its Chicagoland
market entry. "So far, our entrance into the Chicago market has surpassed all
our expectations," notes Ames' Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Joseph
R. Ettore. "The eight stores we opened just a month ago are among the chain's
leaders.

"The customers and communities in and around Chicago have really made us
feel welcome," Ettore continued. "They have responded to our A+ customer
service, our 55 Gold Program and really enjoy our Bargains by the Bagful(R)."

Ames' newest Chicagoland stores are located at: -- 5630 West Belmont
Avenue (Ward 38) -- Dolton Plaza, 1000 East Sibley Boulevard, Dolton,
Illinois

Ames will have more store openings in the Chicago area in March 2001 when
it expects to open two additional Ames stores, one in Villa Park in the
Northwest suburbs and another former Goldblatt's store on South Cicero
Avenue in Chicago.

Ames senior executives, store associates and local dignitaries will kick-off the
Grand Opening Celebrations on Thursday, October 19, 2000, with a
ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9:00 a.m. Special Grand Opening events include
live musical entertainment, product samplings and demonstrations, costumed
characters, giveaways and sweepstakes. These special events will continue
through Saturday, October 21, 2000.

Arthur,

Herzog(Merrill Lynch) has not bought back yet. Their average cost of shorts are way above offers today(making money). So, unless there are local oversold condition a short squeeze is not likely.

Where do you get the information on the holdings of Herzog(Merrill) or any other MM? From what I have learned, or been led to believed, this information is not something they divulge. Do you have a service that deduces this based on data from Nasdaq? Do you do it yourself somehow?
