This is ridiculous. He did not have a "big smile" on his face; he did not seem "gleeful" and "delighted". You are doing quite a bit of wishful post facto interpretation.

At the time, I interpreted that slight smile to be one of some bemusement at the question that there was more to be asked in terms of punishment than the death penalty. Hate crimes legislation does not mean an automatic death penalty, and it is doubtful that the outcome of the trial would have been any different.

But interpret away. That's all that's left to do at this point. I sure disagree, though.
