You are failing to make distinctions. The freedom to associate is guaranteed- even for Nazis. The freedom to do violence is not.

You are totally confusing the issues.

"Why don't we just ban collectives. Make them illegal and force people to associate with
those who are not like them..."

That little bit of hyperbole is not related to ANYTHING I said is it? I support the rights of Nazis to assemble, to speak. No one has to associate with anyone. Hate crimes aren't about making people associate- they are about disallowing hateful actions toward anyone based on group identity.

Collectives and free association are always in balance with the prohibition of discrimination. There is no ideal solution and an action in one causes an effect in the other. This is unavoidable. Putting our head in the sand and creating a laundry list is probably not going to be helpful because it may manifest on a chapter-by-chapter basis.

I guess we'll have to wait until someone complains and look at the situation rationally, now won't we? That's usually the intelligent way to do it. What if the Knights of Columbus start a small city where only Knights of Columbus can live? White supremacists have been talking about doing this with Idaho. Should we let them?
