John,

it's not illegal to be conservative with price cuts.

We (not just you and I, but most posters) are going in circles around this issue on all 3 Intel/AMD threads. Maybe you can explain what you mean once for all.

Why is it that I didn't hear the calls for conservative price cuts from Intel investors until year 2000? There is nothing different about this year's price cuts from any previous year.

The only difference is that this time Intel is stuck with low end parts not really worth much after the price cuts are factored in. All the other years, from beginning of time until 2000, Intel's competitors were in the unenviable position. That's the only difference I see.

So are you calling in some permanent shift of the semiconductor industry, or are you just asking for time until Intel's competitive situation improves?

Joe

I would like to see these two companies start to think about their stockholders. It's illegal to fix prices, it's not illegal to be conservative with price cuts. They both may lose a few units, it will be more than made up for in GM.

John,

While I agree with your premise, like with the Israelis and the Palistinians, rational thinking fell by the wayside a long time ago.

Whenever there is $$$ or the equivalent around, being reasonable goes out of style real quickly.

I had sort of an off and on dialog with f. simons on this, John. He didn't have a response to Message 14580843 .

I was somewhat amazed and impressed when AMD cut ghz parts below $500. Now, a month or 2 later, they're a little above $250. Should AMD drop volumes to raise prices? That's for the economists to decide, but I doubt if Intel will ever let AMD make easy money, on parts Intel can produce in volume. $250 ghz Athlons is probably as easy money as AMD is ever going to make.
