Hate crimes are NOT just aimed at white racists- they are there to prosecute ALL racial acts. Do you remember when Reginald Denny was beaten in LA? I remember that so clearly. That was a racial hate crime. All hate crimes should be held up as particular social evils. They are symbolically useful- imo.

Re: Studies have found that 20% of American whites are racist. Beware of that kind of sensitive opinion polls.... People usually don't brag about being racist --except the fringe KKK loonies. Just here in Belgium, prior to Oct 8th municipal election, polls indicated that Flemish voters wouldn't give far-rightist Vlaams Blok a further lead --especially in Antwerp. Actually, the media even claimed that the neo-fascist party would incur a 2-3% setback in Antwerp.... well, the fact is that the VB almost won a landslide majority in Flanders' major cities and bagged an extra +5% in Antwerp with 33% of the votes!
