My point was *not* that the problems are insurmountable, although coax capacity is not nearly as extensible as pure fiber. Rather, my point was: One cannot simply point and click problems away as though they didn't exist.

As HFC improves and shakes out over the next couple of years, perhaps it will be more user friendly to the point where one would not need a technician to be available on a standby basis for installs. That's what we'll have now. If it doesn't work, call the first level of support over the phone, and if it still doesn't work, roll the truck. As long as this last contingency exists it's an indication to me that it is not a truly technician-free model. Leastwise, not to the extent that any other ISP model is.

I wouldn't be handing out any pink slips to MSO technicians or their contractors just yet, in other words.
