PC Sales in First Week of October Increase After Win ME Debut
October 23, 2000 (TOKYO) -- PC sales in the first week of October 2000 (Sept. 25 - Oct. 1, 2000) increased by 6.7 percent in volume and by 9.6 percent in value from the previous week.

Compared with the same week of the previous year (Sept. 27 - Oct. 3, 2000), PC sales increased by 40.4 percent in volume and increased by 23.5 percent in value. The average retail price rose to 177,071 yen from the previous week's 172,369 yen, up 4,702 yen, according to a report by Nikkei Market Access. These statistics were based on research by GfK Japan Ltd., an information service firm dealing with POS data collected from 3,200 mass retailers of electric appliances.

Entering in the second week from the release, Windows Millennium Edition (Windows ME) is gradually beginning to produce effects on PC sales. It raised PC sales by 6.7 percent from the previous week. In the week when Windows 98 was released in 1998, however, it boosted PC sales by 17.5 percent from the previous week, and still increased them by 14.5 percent in the following week. Compared with that high effectiveness, Windows ME seems to not be having much influence at the start. PC sales will grow at a slow pace until NEC Corp., Fujitsu Ltd., and other makers put new line-ups on the market.

The average retail price that recorded a new low in the previous week turned around to rise due to Sony Corp. and other makers' changeover to new products. The total average retail price increased by about 5,000 yen, and that of desktop PCs rose by nearly 7,000 yen. Thus, PC sales in value increased by 9.6 percent from the previous week, which is higher than the increase of PC sales in volume. In the previous week, sales of notebook PCs and the total PC sales in value fell under those of the previous year. But they are in the recovering phase this week.

GfK Japan is an information service firm that assembles POS data from about 3,200 (as of Oct. 2000) mass retailers of electric home appliances. With the help of GfK Japan, Nikkei Market Access reports weekly PC sales in volume and in value. The PC sales at those 3,200 stores are assumed to account for nearly 20 percent of the whole PC shipments in Japan and 40 percent of the total retail PC sales. In collaboration with GfK Japan, Nikkei Business Publications Inc. (Nikkei BP) offers updated in-depth pay information on IT-related 40 hardware or software items including PCs through "Nikkei BP - GfK SalesWeek3200."
