CSFB Says Build Nokia Positions Ahead Of 3Q Earnings Report (NOK)

(NewsTraders.com)--Investors may want to build positions in Nokia ( NOK ) before the wireless equipment company reports its third-quarter earnings on Oct. 26, according to Credit Suisse First Boston analyst Marc Cabi, who said "the stage is set for a bullish quarter."

Specifically, Cabi, who also sees bullish margin and revenue guidance for the fourth quarter and 2001 coming out of the third-quarter report, said that Nokia's handset business is due for a positive surprise.

Motorola's ( MOT ) weakness in Europe and Ericsson's ( ERICY ) overall handset difficulties could help Nokia, Cabi theorizes, speculating that Nokia's operating margins could reach his high-end estimate of 19.3%, based on Motorola's comments that ASP erosion was just 10% compared to trends of 15% to 20%.

From a more general perspective, the analyst feels momentum is building in the segment, pointing out that Nokia's 8260 product is on back order and the firm's 3310 and 6210 wares are now available across Europe and Asia.

Cabi also noted that component suppliers, such as AVX Corp. ( AVX ), have reported a pick up in orders from Nokia over the past two months.

Turning to another Nokia unit, Cabi commented that he expects the company's infrastructure side to benefit from strong trends in China and the firm's "excellent" showing in 2G upgrades and GPRS, or general packet radio service.

According to the article I posted, NOK component suppliers have reported increased orders from NOK during the last two months. I expect that RF Micro's problems are coming from its other major customer. Perhaps NOK has decided to engage another supplier in competition with RF Micro as well.
