John
we are just trying to digest the info. My reaction to high margins was the same as your's that is if true then that implies no price war yet this "if" bothers me somewhat. Amd is moving up MHz scale while cutting prices yet intel is fairly confident of high margins with 2mil of pIII inventory
????
Intel is also quickly running out of investment portfolio and they would have to make up for 4 billions in capital gains/year which is more than .5/share.

John,
RE:"The AMD folks are missing from the Intel thread tonight. I suppose most are disappointed in Intel's earnings report.

I really don't understand, if the market is stronger than was commonly thought, it is a good thing for AMD stock. And the projected gross margin suggest there will be no price war."

Too many people tune into the war between AMD and Intel and take it personally. Apparently this competitive nature permeates the engineering life style. It gets amplified when certain people seek to divide.
Truth of the matter is that the best case scenario for AMD is for Intel to do well and AMD to do better.
Anything else is a falacy...

Jim

Re: . I suppose most are disappointed in Intel's earnings report.

Well, this droid has been trying to watch the debates and the game - the game is over now (well, for all practical purposes, anyway - as Costas says they are two outs away from Rivera) and the debates weren't anything new - if you liked Bush, you'll still like him and if you liked Gore you'll still like him.

I am very, very, glad that Intel had a good CC and beat estimates. It's great news for the stock of both companies (I hope).

Regards,

Dan

PS - update from the wife - now 9 to 4 Yankees

I told you it was over :-)

John,

The AMD folks are missing from the Intel thread tonight. I suppose most are disappointed in Intel's earnings report.

I think the report was very good. I am afraid that Q4 guidance was not strong enough to get the market out of its current funk. 4 to 8% revenue growth in Q4 over Q3 is modest compared to last year's 12%. I know they said they are trying to be overly conservative ... but this market needs more than this to turn around.

John-- Re: The AMD folks are missing from the Intel thread tonight. I suppose most are disappointed in Intel's earnings report.

I'm very pleased that Intel's continued successes in the server arena, coupled with AMD's total exit from the non-ubercheap notebook market, allowed Intel to continue to maintain high gross margins and report reasonable results. Frankly, I'm kind of annoyed at Intel for having been so damn bullish at the end of q2. I think they set us all up for a much bigger fall than was necessary by allowing a chunk of s.o.b. analysts to make a minor downward change in the second derivative of the semi upswing rate into the beginning of a semi downturn.
