Jeff: I have expounded on this in the past. Re: "You don't have to own stock in a company that you don't believe in." Similar holds true at my workplace. One doesn't have to join the union. About 30 percent don't. They're content to be free-riders. So be it. As for the other 70 percent, why would they object to their union dues going to support candidates and causes favorable to unions? That is one of the functions of unions, is it not?

What about middle managers at large companies, for instance, who are strong-armed into supporting a candidate who will purportedly do good things for the company down the road?

If you're in favor of union dues checkoff for political reasons, then we also need laws on the books covering corporate strong-arming.

No, I think my analogy is valid ... no difference between corporate giving, corporate strong-arm giving and union giving.
