Calif. Dem Warns
Gore to Run Ads

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

SACRAMENTO, Calif.

n aide to Al Gore's campaign in California suggested yesterday that the vice president could lose the nation's largest state unless he starts advertising.

It's the first time any Democrat has suggested Gore might lose California and its 54 electoral votes, which would be a death blow to Democratic hopes of hanging onto the White House.

Garry South, a strategist for Gore in California, criticized the campaign's strategy on several fronts, including the vice president's use of the state primarily as a source of campaign cash.

He said Gore has done too little to point out the Clinton administration's successes and has failed to aggressively respond to accusations and TV ads from GOP nominee George W. Bush.

South, chief political adviser to California Gov. Gray Davis, said in a speech yesterday to the Sacramento Press Club that an apparent narrowing of Gore's lead over Bush had sparked a growing internal debate about whether to advertise for the first time in California.

While Republicans spend about $1.5 million a week on TV ads promoting Bush in the state, Democrats and Gore have spent nothing.

However, senior Gore advisers said yesterday they have no plans to advertise in California.

I predict Gore will pull off by next week. If he does not, then he is in trouble. The third debate was his last chance and he was his normal self - on attack. But then Dubya was also his normal self - a wimp!
