A big day for Nortel Morning News Over Easy October 18, 2000 09:00 AM PT by Matt Berger Today is a big day for optical network developer Nortel Networks (NT). The company announced three major deals, including one with Hewlett-Packard (HWP) to jointly develop a high-bandwidth Internet infrastructure using optical networking technology from the Canadian-based Nortel and HP's Internet infrastructure. Also, Nortel and Antec (ANTC) said today they would combine their high-speed cable access businesses in a push to build Internet connectivity over coaxial cable networks. The new company, dubbed Arris, will acquire Nortel Network's ownership interest in Arris Interactive, created in 1995 by Antec and Nortel to develop cable Internet delivery systems. Nortel Networks said it will transfer to the new company its 81.25 percent interest in Arris Interactive in return for 33 million shares of common stock in the new company and approximately $325 million in cash. Arris Interactive develops products that allow residences to receive telephone calls and Internet service over coaxial cable while Antec uses those products to design and build the actual network. And finally, Nortel said Tuesday it signed a four-year, $1 billion contract to sell its telecommunications equipment to startup service provider Aerie Networks, which will build a 20,000-mile nationwide network that will serve 194 cities. The company will lease its services out to other service providers rather than dealing directly with consumers. MP3.com nears agreement Online music company MP3.com (MPPP) said today it would pay up to $30 million to music publishers in a preliminary pact that would give the company the right to use more than 1 million songs as part of its Internet-based service. Under the deal, trade group National Music Publishers' Association and its licensing subsidiary Harry Fox Agency will allow the songs to be used as part of My.MP3.com, which allows users to store digital music and then access it via any computer. MP3.com originally built its service using a database of more than 80,000 albums without the permission of the music publishers or the record labels that also own the rights to the music. Under the three-year agreement, MP3.com's maximum $30 million payment will cover payments to publishers for past uses of their music on the My.MP3.com service as well as advance royalty payments. Yahoo sells custom CDs Yahoo (YHOO) said Tuesday it signed a deal with online entertainment provider Imix.com to sell custom CDs on its Yahoo Shopping site. The shopping portal will offer customers the ability to build a CD based on Imix's collection of more than 200,000 tracks from record labels such as BMG and Sony Music Group. The site will charge about $1 per song and $2.50 for shipping. China Unicom outlines Qualcomm pact China's No. 2 mobile phone firm, China United Unicom (CHU), said today it will hold a news conference to answer questions about its plans to use wireless technology from Qualcomm (QCOM). Representatives from the state-owned China Unicom will speak Thursday regarding its announcement Monday to use Qualcomm's CDMA technology to build a narrow-band network. Almost all of China's 65 million mobile phone subscribers use the rival GSM (global system for mobile communications) standard promoted by European firms. This announcement will open up the equipment market to several U.S. firms. DoubleClick helps you change address Online ad firm DoubleClick (DCLK), Flatiron Partners and Chase Capital Partners said today they will invest $7.7 million in an email management and change-of-address service, Return Path. DoubleClick has the option over the next year to invest up to $10 million in the company. Return Path and DoubleClick have formed a channel partnership through which DoubleClick will offer Return Path's services to its email clients.
