"the erosion of this foundation has caused rampant moral decay to which few of us are impervious imo, yours truly included "

I dunno about that. I look around I see a pretty damn good place to live. A much better place than 40 years ago. Crime rates are actually dropping, civil rights are giving more people a fair shake, women have more rights. This moral decay is usually cited by those that want to get something. Like tax money for private schools. This country has come a long way without mixing religion into government. I might be as religious as the next guy but I don't want his religion in my government. Look at the governments that are strongly based on religion. Israel, Palestine, Afghanistan, see a common thread? Look at the governments that actively try to suppress religion, Red China, the former USSR, Nazi Germany. It is easy to see that we need a government that keeps it's hands off of religion. It only leads to bad places.

If this country has a "strong foundation" in based on a belief in God, it is in clear violation to what the founders wanted. They invisioned a place where people were free to worship any god, or gods, or a turnip if they so chose. The problem we now have with our society is that some people feel they have a right to legislate their particular brand of morality and force everyone else to live by their beliefs. The day we turn our back and allow this to happen is the day we fracture this country beyond repair. For example, the fact that someone's religious beliefs lead to a conclusion that homosexuality is wrong is their right. I do not care what someone thinks, I care what they do. When you start to legilate in such a way as to deny someone their rights as an american because of your religous beliefs is the day I take up arms against a totalitarian regime.
