TSMC, UMC foresee wafer foundry boom

Taipei, Oct. 17, 2000 (CENS)--Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (TSMC) and United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC), the top two domestic providers of wafer foundry services, are optimistic of the global demand for the services in the near future.

The TSMC and the UMC, both listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange, performed well in business operations for the first three quarters of this year, recording earnings per share of nearly NT$4 and about NT$3, respectively. Both indicated that their wafer foundry capacity is currently fully occupied and the capacity will be short of demand next year.

IDMs (integrated device manufacturers), among all sources of orders for wafer foundry services, increase the most in number, but IC (integrated circuit) design companies still make up the largest source. The total order volume for wafer foundry services from IDMs is increasing and estimated to take up 39% of the total capacity for all providers of wafer foundry services around the world in 2003.

On the other hand, IDMs will increasingly contract out part of their wafer demand for production by providers of foundry services, with the percentage expected to rise from 3% in 1997 to 7% in 2003.

According to forecast by Dataquest, the total revenue generated by all semiconductor companies around the world is estimated to grow by an average of 20% a year during the period 1999-2003, and that by all providers of wafer foundry services by 28%. The ratio of the latter to the former is projected to rise from 3.8% in 1997 to 7% in 2003

4 stocks to dump and 5 to buy
I’ll briefly review my portfolio, and give short reasons for my moves.

Alliance Semiconductor (ALSC, news, msgs) is basically an earnings play that is trading like an asset play. How its portfolio of publicly traded securities -- including PMC-Sierra (PMCS, news, msgs), Broadcom (BRCM, news, msgs), Chartered Semiconductor (CHRT, news, msgs), Vitesse Semiconductor (VT, news, msgs) and United Microelectronics (UMC, news, msgs) -- moves is how the stock moves. Given the malaise in the chip sector, the stock is therefore trading down. However, given that the malaise is largely PC-related, and given that Alliance is not a PC DRAM company, it is hard to justify a sell on fundamental reasons. At the very end of the day, the stock fell as it reported solid earnings well above expectations. Hold the entire position.
