Linguistic Forum Targets Emerging Voice Market
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 18, 2000--General Magic, Inc. (Nasdaq:GMGC - news), a premier voice application service provider, today announced the formation of the Voice and Language Technology Forum, the first forum of its kind, to bring together distinguished linguists from academia and industry to further the understanding of the role linguistics plays in the emerging voice market. Debates and panel discussions featuring current topics relating to language and the design of innovative voice solutions will be part of the Forum's annual program. The first event will take place in December.

General Magic is leading the industry with its innovative use of linguistics in the design of voice applications for leading enterprise, telecommunications, and Internet companies. With more than four years experience designing voice user interfaces, General Magic has amassed significant linguistic equity that it leverages in developing superior voice solutions for its business customers.

``General Magic recognized early on that applying language and the ''rules`` of spoken discourse is key to the design of engaging, personality-rich voice user interfaces,'' said Bill Byrne, director of speech and language at General Magic. ``We saw this as a new discipline for talented linguists and have recruited an exceptional speech and language team''

General Magic is committed to delivering voice user interfaces that improve the quality of customer service by creating a natural conversation between people and information. This Forum is an important vehicle in advancing the adoption of conversational-style voice user interfaces by companies around the world.

``Bringing the results of linguistic research into technology creates exciting new opportunities for linguists around the world,'' said Professor William Ladusaw of the University of California at Santa Cruz. ``We applaud General Magic's commitment to linguistics. The depth of their speech and language team indicates a sound understanding of the vital role that linguistics can play in creating effective voice-enabled applications.''

The Voice and Language Technology Forum was founded by General Magic in conjunction with faculty from the University of California at Santa Cruz, University of California at San Diego and Stanford University.
