Handset royalties (4-5%) generally tend to be higher that networking equipment royalties (estimated to be 2% or so, don't quote me on that). Also, the handset market generates more in revenues than the networking market overall (this trend could accelerate given how ASPs could be higher for 3G handsets), and with regards to W-CDMA, Qualcomm will get royalties on base station sales but not on the core switching equipment, thus making handsets even more important. I've been arguing for a long time that going forward, the popularity of W-CDMA vs. cdma2000 is going to be less important to Qualcomm's bottom line than the issue of 3G handset ASPs.
