I'm no McCain fan. Most of his( phony ) supporters were democrats who recognized him as a guy Gore could beat.

Big media wanted him to be the nominee since that would add value to their inventory of dirt they have on him. That and of course he kept flogging their top issue (but nobody else's) - government regulated political campaigns.
