Charles - as I have posted numerous times (and again just now) SUNW's reliability record on their big systems is not something to be proud of. Even when the data points representing downtime from the I/O subsystem FUBAR are taken out, the field MTBF numbers are still less than 98.5.

You have to compare like installations to get a feel for reliability. Comparing backend UE systems to departmental servers run without IT support is hardly a measure that means anything.

Various vendors are offering uptime guarantees on Win2K systems of 99.99%, and some are offering 99.999%. Field data on those systems (and on the previous generation of NT4 advanced server installations) shows that they achieve better than 99.5 in the field routinely, and better than 99.9 in controlled configurations.

The downtime problems on big SUNW systems are gradually affecting the perception in the marketplace, and unless SUNW addresses the issue it will begin to affect sales, IMO. This is the opposite of the position that you and some others seem to be proposing here.
