Bangladesh customs seizes gold bars left on airplane

DHAKA: Bangladesh customs officials today said they had seized 22 kilograms of gold left behind on a Bangladesh Biman airlines plane at the Dhaka airport, reports UNI.

''We recovered 200 gold bars weighing a total of 22 kg on board a Biman aircraft which arrived from Kuala Lumpur on yesterday,'' said Fakhrul Alam, assistant commissioner of Bangladesh customs.

He said each of the bars weighed 110 grams and estimated its total local market value at 13 million taka (241,800 U S dollars).

Alam said customs inspectors searched the aircraft on a tip off after all the passengers had disembarked and found the bars in a bag in an overhead luggage compartment.

''The bars were unclaimed and have been seized. We are investigating the matter,'' one Biman official said without giving details.
