Anyone really interested the outcome of the election should punch into the Iowa Electronic Market. 128.255.244.60 This is a true, no crap, political futures market. Every day quotations are available for various outcomes. If, for instance, you believe Gore will win, you can buy for $.52 a contract that will pay off $1 if Gore wins the popular vote. If you believe Bush will win you can buy a contract for $.48. If you look at the history you will see that punters have preferred Gore's chances for most of the elections. If you are a believer in Lazio, it will only cost you $.28 for a contract. I suspect there is not an enormous amount of bull in this market. I can't see why a serious person would bet against his beliefs. Of course, if you really hate Gore and fear his victory, you could buy a bunch of Gore contracts. If he wins, you would have some money and perhaps a president you will hate. Better hurry, though, new membership closes Oct 23.
