Or to put it another way some investors seems to care more about the 1 in a million chance that the company could be the next mega-cap, then they do about solid profitability. This was particuarly true of the internet bubble stocks. That bubble might have poped (but not for all of them), but there are other hot areas with crazy valuations. I guess investors like to swing for the fences rather then play small ball.

I don't think you quite get it....they use the excuse of not knowing how far and how fast a new company can grow to bid up the price of the stock. And when someone says, the company can't be worth that much; the answer is how do you know? There's no history to prove otherwise.

In other words they don't have to justify the valuation because there is no data to throw that valuation into question.

When that data does exist, and it will eventually, is when the hi-fliers come back to earth and start acting like the older companies.....again, the rare exceptions are the SUNWs and CSCOs.
