Tom,
Thank you for your contributions to this thread. Quite informative.
While my knowledge of the technology is not without limits, I do not feel comfortable trying to add in that direction.
However, I wish to point out from a strategic point of view the points that attracted my attention in the Bishop interview.
At one point he states:
"I would name all five companies as competitors -- naming IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Sun Micro, Compaq (CPQ), Dell (DELL) and sometimes Apple (AAPL) -- because they all, in our times of confusion, have crept into our market space. So they have nibbled away on the edge."

When a company loses its grip on its market, other competitors will either "nibble" on its space, or some vulture would move in and sit on its space completely. In recovering, it is usually far easier to regain nibbled parts than a squashed out market.

At another point he states:
"In the last 10 months since I've been in the job, I have directed all resources back to satisfying the technical and creative user. Now, my belief is that we will turn, and the beginning of the turn will be visible in fiscal year 2001, which began July 1, 2000. My No. 1 goal is shareholder value and managing profitability in a predictable manner."

He deffinately has a clear focus. Judging if that focus is the right or wrong one though will require more technical knowledge than I am comfortable to base an opinion on. Nonetheless, surmising from what I have seen on the SGI turnaround so far, I believe Bishop's work has more than a reasonable chances of paying back.

One last comment that I just can not leave without note. He actually states:
"In my view, it (the stock price) has been completely trashed and undervalued."
I just thought I would point this out in case you missed it. ;-)
Good luck
