I questioned WHY "not much has changed for America", for the 40 years (nearly 2
generations) since LBJ's "Great Society" speech, and BILLIONS of dollars to ALL
sorts of social programs to help rectify problems...

You seem to believe (your words) "that America's failed Drug Policy ...is an issue
which has corrupted America beyond just the use of drugs..." and then you say:
"I think we've got to explore varying legalization strategies with all
drugs, not just marijuana. "

Are you saying that legalizing drugs, including marijuana, will stop the criminal
acts caused by the drugs (drive by shootings, robbery, rape, killing, etc
etc....???

See below if you are interested in my thoughts.

Reply #48686...you said: "Hmmm. Your above comment triggered my memory
regarding the so-called Liberal Media. Back in the early 90's
I was co-directing a conference at the Harvard Law School relative to America's
failed drug policy."

I mentioned in Reply #48867: "search out LBJ's "Great Society" speech.....after
40 years, most of which was under a solid Democratic
Congress, and Billions of Dollars (yes BIG CAPITAL B)....that have been
poured into this society so that
everyone would have a fair chance...WHY had not much changed..."

You said in Reply #48902: "America's failed Drug War, with both Democrats
and Republicans to blame, has considerable responsibility for, as
you wrote, "not much changed." It's an issue which has corrupted America
beyond just the use of drugs. No
politician has yet shown guts enough to take this issue head on

I replied in #48911: That is certainly one BIG reason...in fact, so much so that I
wonder just how many states have political party
planks that want to "decriminalize marijuana"...if anyone thinks that isn't the start
of a downhill fall into many more
serious drugs probably should talk to both the person who is taking drugs, and
their families.
....Washington State Democratic Party platform has
decriminalization of marijuana as one of their planks.

In your Reply #48962, you say: Drug addiction is a much lower percentage, I think around
five percent, however I'd have to confirm this figure. Anyone know?

KLP NOTE: Drug and Alcohol addiction are the SAME percentages!!! The
number is 1 in 10.....Unfortunately, someone close to me has had problems, and so
I know what the problems are, and what they can be. Ask any Police Force
member and/or Detective and/or Judge if you care to.....they will be MORE than happy to tell you
of some of the MARIJUANA, ALCOHOL, AND OTHER DRUG problems, and
the human toll, as well as the financial toll for the person, their families AND the
communities in which they live!!!!!!!

You indicate it is a medical condition, not a criminal condition. I agree that
"addiction" is a medical condition.

However, NOT all drug use causes addiction to every individual!!

BUT the substance, whatever it is, CAN and DOES cause severe problems for the
individual AND for the community at large, and some of these problems are very
definitely CRIMINAL. Just look in any newspaper, on any given day.

I had said: >>>Washington State Democratic Party platform has
decriminalization of marijuana as one of their planks.<<<

You replied: Although on the surface is sounds ludicrous, I think we've got to
explore varying legalization strategies with all
drugs, not just marijuana. That marijuana, a non-physically addicting substance,
has gone illegal for so long, itself, is
a criminal act given it's more beneign than the effects of achohol which is
acceptable in our society.
