Aware Inc. Up 57% After Beating 3Q Expectations

Digital subscriber line company Aware Inc.'s (AWRE) better-than-expected third quarter earnings helped the company rebound from Wednesday's sector drop caused by a competitor's earnings warning.

"Aware reaffirmed their positive outlook and let investors know this is different" from Copper Mountain Networks Inc. (CMTN), which said late Tuesday its fourth-quarter earnings per share could fall as much as 24 cents below estimates, said Chase H&Q analyst Michael Neiberg.

Aware will be able to avoid Copper Mountain's fate because of a more diversified customer base, Neiberg said.

Earlier Thursday, the Bedford, Mass., company reported third quarter net of 15 cents a diluted share, 3 cents above consensus.

Aware expects fourth quarter earnings of 16 cents a diluted share before taxes on revenue of $9 million, and sees fiscal year 2001 EPS of 86 cents to 91 cents before taxes on revenue of $45 million to $47 million.

Company officials were not immediately available for comment.

After falling 35.1% Wednesday, shares of Aware recently traded at $32, up $11.63, or 57.1%, on volume of 537,300 compared with a daily average 316,300.
