I'm reminded that the reason I didn't invest in SCM a long time ago is because I feared the category would be subsumed by ERP.

Mike's fears were well founded. Software guru from The Chasm Group, Tom Kippola had those fears (or rather concerns) in 1998 and in two interviews with the Fool he shared those concerns about the ERP value adding application vendors.

Things have worked out differently in a very compelling way. Siebel and i2 are now two of the leading ebusiness application companies for the next phase of their growth. I always agreed with Mike on Siebel even though it took him a little longer to tally up his score to handicap them a gorilla even though all of Silicon Valley (outside of Ellison) had pegged it such. UF, myself and others enjoyed the teasing of him at the time. However, we knew he held shares all during that tallying up phase.
