HSINCHU, Taiwan -- Silicon foundry revenues at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. surged 141% to NT$47.5 billion ($1.5 billion) in the third quarter, compared to NT$19.7 billion ($620 million) in the period last year, the company reported today. TSMC said its net income reached NT$20.1 billion ($647 million) in the third quarter vs. NT$6.1 billion ($190 million) last year.

TSMC also announced it will increase its wafer-processing capacity to 4.79 million eight-inch equivalent wafers in 2001 from an expected volume of 3.4 million wafer in 2000. Previously, TSMC had said it was planning capacity for 4.76 million wafers in 2001.

The world's largest silicon foundry company today reported that it has set a budget for capital spending at $3.8 billion in 2001, slightly lower than this year's $3.9 billion planned by TSMC. An additional $1.1 million is also being spent this year by TSMC affiliates, such as WaferTech LLC in Camas, Wash., and Silicon on Systems Manufacturing Co. in Singapore, which is a joint venture with Philips Semiconductors. TSMC did not release an estimate for affiliate capital spending next year.
