You are correct, fear of instability hurt the communities immeasurably. Not only were businessmen leery of locating in slum areas, insurance went sky high. Jobs and convenient shopping vanished. I am not sure that rioting started due to opportunism, although many rioters were motivated solely by the desire to loot. We cannot ignore the impact of images of whites jeering at schoolchildren in Little Rock, or hoses being turned on gloved church ladies in Selma. Nor can we ignore the impact of the Vietnam War draft, which, due to deferments, disproportionately affected lower socio- economic groups, including inner city blacks and working class whites. But you are right enough, a sense of manipulating the media and getting political favors by acting up developed, and alot of people got in on the act, as kids burned their draft cards and were rewarded with shows of support from Senators and congressmen, and calls to heed the young. Why shouldn't the brothers get their fifteen minutes and some neighborhood grants to administer?
