I don't believe this has happened in the US in years - if ever due to the many decades we were not allowed to own the yellow stuff. Even if it were done that way today, could we be assured it is not being loaned.

Then there still exists the problem of marketing doesn't there? Wouldn't this limit it to:
1. Those investors that buy individual stocks - not mutual funds on their jobs
2. Mutual Funds which invest or hedge commodities + gold funds
3. Extreme Maverick fringe of the Fund Managers
4. Mistakes - in orders through key strokes or wrong ticker spoken to brokers?

I'm not saying this wouldn't be better than it is now, just not as good as it should be.
