Actually there are notes in Washington's accounts about how much beer and cider he had to buy to get the voters drunk enough to vote for him for the House of Burgesses. Franklin too the job as colonial deputy postmaster general so he could distribute his newspapers free. He admitted to bribing English parliamentarians:

"They should have let me go on. I could have bought the whole Parliament, the whole government of England. And it would have cost much less than a single year of this war."
