X, You are not allowing for the possible degrees of belief in the word believe. The definition of atheist does not say "one who believes with certainty" or "one who is certain" that god doesn't exist.

I don't hide in closets. I can accept also being called an agnostic, but I don't like the the perception that too many people have of that word as somebody who temporarily doesn't believe, and just needs salvation. I do not believe in god (although I will look at evidence for the existence of a god or gods), therefore I am an atheist.

Actually it all depends on circumstances, too. If Christians go on another Crusade and put a gun to my head, I become a Christian. Temporarily.
