Heinz, I think a deal was made on oil to quiet the ME.

Russia is interested in high oil prices as is the ME.

Therefore I speculate that Clinton promised not to bug OPEC about high oil prices (we know already it is not inflationary) and the Russians and ME rulers agreed to tone down Arafat. BTW Egypt also benefits from high oil prices. More interesting is that Quadafy is quiet enjoying the ride.

Just wonder what the French who started/instigated the recent troubles got out of this.

I have a theory which I may post over the weekend.

As to the clash of civilization IMHO it is inevitable, fact is that during the Arabic Empire Jews and Muslims lived in harmony. It lasted until the Spaniards burned the Jews to the stick and more Jews moved to Europe.

I agree on the conflict along the religious cultural devide, see the Pakistani India conflict or how communism spread ...... never lasted over several cultures or religions...... only one at a time with some lapses <GGG>

Re: Yugoslavia, something about it on NPR tonight, Croatia, Serbia and Bosnia all have new leaders within the past few months, none of them as nationalistic as the ones that have been replaced. So maybe there's hope for the return of nude German sunbathers along the Adriatic coast. ;^)
