The 1.2GHz system was equipped with a Via KT-133 chipset, 256MB of PC133 SDRAM, a 30GB, 7200RPM ATA100 hard disk and ASUS V7700 GeForce 2 GTS graphics adapter with 64MB of RAM. It earned a WinScore 6.0 mark of 142; while this is certainly an impressive score, Gateway was able to equal it in the fastest production PC I've tested so far, the 1.1GHz Athlon-powered Gateway Select 1100. It will be interesting to see how a Gateway system based on the 1.2GHz Athlon performs. The 800MHz Duron demo system likewise used a Via chipset, and was equipped with 256MB of RAM, a 30GB 7200RPM hard disk and a GeForce GTS 2 video controller with 64MB of RAM. It earned a WinScore 6.0 mark of 97. This is an astonishing result for a processor intended for a value system. This indicates performance roughly equivalent to 97% of the overall throughput of our 933MHz Pentium III-powered Dell OptiPlex GX200 reference PC, which uses Intel's 820 (Camino) chipset and Rambus RDRAM. And things are only going to get more interesting. Intel will be introducing its new Pentium 4 processor, widely reputed to be entering the stage at 1.4 and 1.5GHz, within the next few weeks. Via's new Socket A chipsets that support DDR SDRAM will mean systems should be available from system vendors soon with the new RAM mated to Athlons and Durons. As soon as we can report it, we'll let you know how the new Pentium 4 and DDR PCs perform, and how well they stack up against each other. I should point out, incidentally, that the fastest Intel system I've tested to date is a Dell Dimension XPS B1000R, which posted a WinScore 6.0 mark of 112. The fastest Celeron system I've tested maxed out at a WinScore 6.0 mark of 50. The flurry of new processors and machines based upon them over the next three months is sure to be bewildering in their number and kind. Check back here for an explanation and comparison of the new players.winmag.com Intel is in trouble when you couple a Duron with DDR. Milo
