Then they sold it for a hefty profit after the real estate market had recovered.

I really feel bad for some HK folks who bought houses during the peak of the market, and rode them all the way down. They have negative values on their assets. Now that the US market is recovered, but not HK for some time.
See how hot the US market is.

It's important to realize the magnitude of the British empire at it's peak in 1900.

The Brits had abused lots of power and violated lots of human rights when they ruled. Even during WWII, they ordered Canadian, Nepali, and Indian mercenary troops to defend HK for them, and they left HK long after they heard the Rape of NanKing incident in the mainland. The Canadian grenadier troop, which was based in Winnipeg, was ill-trained and spent much of the time playing baseball in Canada. They thought they went overseas for vacations but, in fact, for a suicide mission. Anyway, have you been to Stanley Peninsula in southern part of the HK Island ? There's where most of the Canadians got trapped after retreating from assaults. They didn't surrender because the Brits ordered them not to, and they got tortured and mutilated alive in St. Stevens College.... Talking about the legacy of Brits...

I think Chinese overplay the unlucky number "4" thing

How nice of you knowing this thing.

the Hong Kong MTR is the only mass-transit railway in the world that is profitable

I guess the HKSAR wants to bring all the world wonders to HK. They now have a copied version of the Golden Gate Bridge. And they are talking about building a tallest building. I think HK needs more tourism in order to survive in it's own right.

My impression is that Hong Kong benefitted from British rule -- at least by comparison to other SE Asian countries.

Part of that because of the mainland. And also HK people are one of the hardest workers in the world....unlike the Indians during the British rule.

the Mainland now requires that all children be taught Mandarin and Cantonese

That's what not I know of...interesting.
But I know the English level in HK is getting so bad. I think Beijing wants foreign businessmen to learn Mandarin and the Chinese culture before making money there. They simply don't want English stuff anymore.
