How does
>And bombing defenceless countries
relate to trade deficits or the value of the dollar?

>u.s. 400+ billion trade deficit this year does'nt count?
Count for what? Do you think a trade deficit/surplus is an ethical issue?

Like it or not, the value of the USD reflects what people are willing to pay in their currency. Ask yourself why they are willing to trade 1.5 CDN$ for 1 US$. Is it because they like U.S. foreign policy? I doubt it. More likely, it is because they believe they will see less depreciation in what a US$ can buy than they will see in their own currency.

Do you think that our (CDN) dollar was US$1.04 in the late sixties because the U.S. didn't bomb other countries then? Well, they did. Our dollar was higher than the U.S. dollar because our economy was strong and the potential for growth of Canadian investments was higher. Income tax was 9% and the debt was negligible. That is no longer the case.

Your dislike of the americans is palpable. I won't try to make you like the U.S., but please, try to be rational in your opinions. Don't let your politics cloud your economic judgement.

You trade surplus argument is bass ackwards. The balance of trade is heavily in the favour of the Canadian dollar. The dollar's value still slips in spite of the favourable balance of trade. That should tell you something. It tells me that I can still make more money off my capital if I put it in the U.S. than I can in Canada.

BTW, you will notice that Canada's currency has appreciated against most other currencies since we balanced our federal budget. I bet Australia, Germany and Japan have nationalists like you berating Canada's overvalued currency. Those damn hegemonic Canadians! How dare they balance their budget? It must be some sort of conspiracy!

Is there another thread where we can continue this? As Idle Annie says, "If it saves one life, its worth it."
