Re: 'P4 IPC: 1.4 GHz P4 <= 1.2 GHz P3 on most benchmarks. True?'

The Pentium 4 will do certain functions at the same speed as a slower Pentium 3 and it will do quite a few operations much faster than a Pentium III - or an AthWiper.

The Pentium II and the original Pentium had pretty much the same perfromance/clock speed overlap - do you remember that ?

Do you remember what happened to Pentium II clcok speeds after that - and Pentium III clock speeds after the Pentium II ?

The issue for Intel is that the Pentium 4 architecture permits much faster clock speeds - and hence much faster overall performance.

Now, I'll bet in 5 months you can make the claim that a 1.7 GHz Pentium 4 is no faster than a 1.4 GHz Pentium III - except that you won't be able to get a 1.4 GHz Pentium III.

You and your AMDroid buddies can butt slap yourselves till you are blue in the face about IPC.

Intel's Pentium 4 will permit such high clock speeds that it's IPC is an issue only to the butt slappers with a slower clocked AthWipey.
